Liverpool must reportedly extinguish the threat of Roma if they hope to secure the signature of Atletico Madrid forward Adrian Lopez during the January transfer window.

According to talkSPORT, the Reds and the Serie A leaders are both in contention to sign Adrian, whose role at the Vicente Calderon has become limited this season.

Adrian has started only two games in La Liga following the summer acquisition of David Villa from Barcelona, while the prolific form of Diego Costa has also kept the 25-year-old Spain international out of the side.

Liverpool are reported to be hopeful of taking advantage of the player's situation in Madrid, and a fee of £7 million could be enough for Brendan Rodgers to prise Adrian to Anfield when the transfer window opens once more.

The Liverpool manager may already have Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge at his disposal in forward positions, but lacks quality back-up and Lopez appears to have been identified as a potential recruit.

Liverpool are likely, however, to be contested by Roma in their pursuit of Adrian, with Rudi Garcia also keen to bolster his goalscoring options when the opportunity presents itself in the New Year.

Roma have enjoyed a breathtaking start under their new manager, having won their opening 10 matches of the Serie A season before consecutive draws in the last two weeks.
