Manchester United's hopes of signing Barcelona playmaker Andres Iniesta have suffered a blow, with reports in Spain claiming the Catalan giants are keen for the 29-year-old to renew his contract in December.
The Red Devils were tipped to make a January bid for the reportedly unsettled World Cup winner, but Sport.es claim that Barcelona are not considering any scenario other than Iniesta renewing his current deal before the turn of the New Year.
The reigning La Liga champions regard the attacking midfielder as an important player for the present and short-term future - and believe they are closer to reaching an agreement following significant progress in discussions over the last two months.
Iniesta is expected to sign the contract renewal, which would run until 2017 and make him one of the club's highest paid players - behind Lionel Messi - in the process.
United, meanwhile, face the prospect of missing out on two Barcelona stars in as many transfer window.
In the summer, David Moyes attempted to lure Cesc Fabregas to Old Trafford, only for the ex-Arsenal star to commit himself to his boyhood club.
