Arsenal are set to fight French champions Paris Saint-Germain for the services of Italian full-back Ignazio Abate, according to sources.
Arsene Wenger is said to be drawing up a list of potential targets as speculation grows that long-serving right-back Bacary Sagna could be departing the club next summer.
And the Frenchman has now pin-pointed AC Milan star Abate as an option for the January transfer window, despite the fact that Paris Saint-Germain have also been linked with the player.
The 27-year-old, who has 14 caps for Italy, shares an agent with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and so there could be a ready-made connection between himself and the Parisian outfit.
Wenger knows however that any attempts at replacing Sagna will need to be concluded well before his contract expires in 2014, in order to avoid disrupting his squad with changes.
Sagna himself has been linked with a move to France, and has thus far been some way off of penning a new deal at the Emirates.
