Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has set his sights on Marseille youngster Giannelli Imbula, despite the 21-year-old only joining the French side this summer.

The Special One has sent scouts to watch Imbula more than once, according to The Daily Express, as he begins his plans to strengthen the Blues in the upcoming transfer window.

The Frenchman - who was born in Belgium - joined Marseille from Guingamp in the previous window, but his fiery attitude has caused trouble in France.

The hot-head was dropped from the Under-21 national side this week after saying something 'inappropriate' to a member of staff, and was later made to apologise publicly for his remark

He's made 12 starts so far the French giants, but has recently been benched.

Mourinho is keen on acquiring the defensive midfielder's signature as he sees Imbula as the perfect replacement for Claude Makelele - a player he moulded into the best holding midfielder in the world during his first spell in west London.

Chelsea's title rivals Arsenal are also interested in obtaining his services, but Roman Abramovich's spending powers are superior to the Gunners' and a £25m bid from the Blues would be more than the Emirates Stadium outfit are willing to pay.
