Lionel Messi: Should he ever leave Barcelona?

Published 2 Comments

With rumours in recent weeks that an adidas club was set to pay Messi's 250 million euros release clause, his future was then thrown into doubt.

Messi has been at FC Barcelona for his entire professional career. So the question is, should he seek a new challenge?  At only 26 years of age, Messi still has a large portion of his career left, but should that time be spent with Barca?

Chelsea and Bayern, both adidas clubs, were possible suitors for Messi's services. The plan was for either one of the clubs to pay half of the release clause and adidas to pay the rest.

Yet it seems unthinkable to picture Messi putting on a uniform that wasn't Barcelona's. He terrorises league teams year in and year out. Could it be possible that the Argentine star is getting bored of the same, three-team league?

For the sake of his image and career, Messi should stay. He needs to go on and become possibly the greatest one-club player of all time.

- Pros of Messi leaving:

He could potentially play in the English Premier League to prove to any doubters that he is one the greatest footballers ever.

He could join an adidas club, which would bring huge benefits to the player and the club in a monetary aspect.

Make a fresh start to a new chapter to his career. His injuries and form appear to haunt him every once in a while. A move could help him regain proper fitness and form.

- Cons of Messi leaving:

He would be regarded as a traitor by Barca fans and this would lead to a decline in popularity.

A new team means a new system, so he would have to forget about the majestic tiki-taka that he knows and loves at Barcelona. He would have to adapt to the new system and if he fails in doing so swiftly, heavy diatribes would fall upon him.

He wouldn't have the same amount of chances in breaking records since he would experience a whole new atmosphere.

What should Messi do? Staying seems like the better option, but starting a new chapter can also be tempting for him.
