AS Monaco owner wanted to buy Manchester United

Published 3 Comments

AS Monaco owner Dmitry Rybolovlev has sensationally revealed that he considered buying Manchester United, according to Sport Witness.

In an exclusive interview with French publication Paris Match, the Russian multi-billionaire recalled how he fell in love with football after attending a Premier League match as a spectator.

"The first football game I went to was about ten years ago, at Chelsea," Rybolovlev explained. "Not in a box but in the stands, with the fans.

"I discovered that unique emotion only football can create."

After his brief flirtation with the sport at Stamford Bridge, Rybolovlev set about purchasing a club for himself, and came close to making offers to a number of different sides - in addition to Manchester United - before opting for AS Monaco, then of Ligue 2, in 2011.

"Before Monaco, other clubs interested me," he added. "Like Manchester United where I had a box.

"But AS Monaco is a club with a long and beautiful history and a team both local and national. In a way, it really is a unique club."

Manchester United fans might be left thinking what might have been, after seeing Claudio Ranieri splash more than £150million on playing talent at Stade Louis II over the past couple of seasons under the ownership of Rybolovlev.

Radamel Falcao, James Rodriguez, Geoffrey Kondogbia and Joao Moutinho are to name just a few of the newest recruits, that wouldn't look out of place at Old Trafford.

However, they are all now strutting their stuff in France, following their big-money transfers in the summer.
