The World Cup remains the pinnacle for almost every footballer.

While some might suggest that international football means less these days, try telling that to the players who could miss next summer's World Cup finals in Brazil.

A top-level player will only usually get two or three opportunities to play at a World Cup finals - many others less than that - which is why it's so crucial that they're playing regular first-team football in the months preceding the showpiece tournament.

For those players on the fringes of their club's first teams, they have a big decision to make in January: move on and play elsewhere, or stick around in the hope that things will change.
