Brand new statistics have revealed that the UEFA Champions League (UCL) Facebook page has the fastest growing sports audience in the world of social media.
Over the course of October the UCL page wracked up a total of 1.6 million new fans on the social networking site – more than any global sports league.
This was higher than the totals attained by both the Premier League and NBA, which have respective total followers of nine and 18 million.
The UEFA Champions League page can also boast having the second largest audience of any sports league on Facebook, now less than four million behind the NBA.
Originally founded in 1955, the European Cup has grown over the years and was reshaped in 1992, becoming the UEFA Champions League.
The most successful club in Europe to-date are Real Madrid who have won the competition nine times, with AC Milan victorious seven times and current holders Bayern Munich the winners on five separate occasions.
Premier League side Liverpool have also won the competition five times, while Manchester United (three), Nottingham Forest (two), Celtic, Chelsea and Aston Villa have all brought the trophy back to Britain in the past.
UEFA now has a total of four official pages within the top 20 global sports leagues on Facebook, accumulating a whopping 20.3 million fans.
