The NBA have launched an official investigation to the Twitter war between the family of J.R. Smith and Brandon Jennings, reports CbsSports.com.
The spat started when Jennings tweeted Smith's brother, Chris, questioning the players' inclusion on the New York Knicks roster.
The tweet was deleted but J.R hit back in defence of his brother and told Jennings he had no respect for the player after deleting the initial tweet.
He then went on to seemingly threaten Jennings by saying he "might call some of my Number street homies an put #Detroit on smash for a min!" and tagged the tweet with "DeadSerious."
It was the apparent threat that has sparked the NBA in to life and a committee will be looking in to the matter.
However, Smith has denied that he meant the tweet as a threat.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday evening before the Knicks' game against the Rockets, Smith said: "Threaten? No. There's a way to threaten somebody, and that's not the way to publicly threaten somebody.
"It's not that serious. I go to L.A. in the summertime and see him all the time ... I don't know how it got this blow out of proportion."
Smith did admit that tweet frustrated him, however and lamented the fact that it isn't the first time his brother has received criticism on the social media site.
"I was definitely frustrated because you get tired of people trying to pick on your little brother, so it's my little brother, I'm going to step up for him, good bad or ugly," he said. "So it's not just to Brandon. It's to anybody who says anything about him.
"It happens every day. People criticise him, talk about what he deserves and what he doesn't deserve. I think he works hard for what he does. And whoever doesn't like it, they don't like it."
This isn't the first time Smith has landed in hot water for his social media activities. In March 2012 he was fined $25,000 for posting inappropriate pictures of semi-naked ladies on Twitter.
