Wayne Rooney has reiterated his belief that Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil is a "fantastic player".

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson revealed in his latest autobiography that Rooney urged him to sign Ozil after the 2010 World Cup finals.

However, Ferguson did not take Rooney's advice, and the Germany international subsequently joined Spanish giants Real Madrid.

Now he's at Arsenal - and Rooney is still just as impressed three years down the line.

“He’s a clever player,” the United striker was quoted as saying by the Manchester Evening News. “He doesn’t stick to one position, he moves along the line. He moves in behind positions in midfield, he can score and assist goals. He’s a fantastic player.”

David Moyes, Ferguson's successor at Old Trafford, recently revealed that he too rejected the opportunity to sign Ozil.

"We weren't close to buying him although something was mooted," Moyes commented. "But we had Shinji Kagawa and Wayne Rooney. It wasn't something we required at that time and we were looking at different positions."

Ozil has enjoyed a positive start to his Gunners career since leaving the Bernabeu at the end of the summer transfer, scoring three goals and contributing a handful of assists in his first 13 appearances for the club.
