Washington Redskins star Trent Williams has accused NFL umpire Roy Ellison of swearing at him during Sunday's disappointing defeat against the Philadelphia Eagles, reports NFL.com.
The 25-year-old offensive tackle reported the incident straight after the 24-16 loss at the weekend, and a spokesman for the NFL has confirmed that the league is investigating the matter.
Speaking to reporters after the Week 11 clash, Williams alleged that Ellison made several derogatory references to his weight, and accused the referee of disrespectful behaviour, after calling him "a garbage ass disrespectful mother******".
"I just don't think there's no room for you to have to take that from the team and the refs," reflected Williams. "I think it's very unprofessional and it sucks.
"I'm at a loss for words. You never expect that as a player going into a game to have to beef with the refs also."
Ellison has served as an NFL umpire for 10 years since 2003, and has never before been publicly accused of inappropriate behaviour that has brought the game into disrepute.
However, several of Williams's Redskins teammates are understood to have verified the claim, with veteran lineman Kory Lichtensteiger adding that the exchange was unlike anything he'd ever experienced before.
"That's exactly what Mr. Umpire said. He walked in between me and Trent when he said it."
