Frickley Athletic defender Steven Gardener has earned himself a place on blooper reels for all eternity after a bizarre own goal that was forced by Rhodri Giggs, brother of Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs.
Gardener's howler came in a weekend meeting between Frickley and FC United of Manchester at Bury's Gigg Lane and, unfortunately for him, was caught on camera.
The Frickley player was the furthest man back as his side took a corner and, when the ball was punted up field after FC United had extinguished the danger, Gardner collected the clearance near the halfway line.
Under pressure from Giggs, Gardener then tried to find his goalkeeper with an ambitious back pass, but proceeded only the smash it way over his head and into the net to provide FC United with the lead.
It was the opening goal of the encounter, which FC United won 3-0, and one Gardener will be unable to erase from his memory for some time.
Three points for FC United, who were set up by disenfranchised supporters of Manchester United following the Glazer takeover of the Old Trafford club, saw them climb to 11th in the Evo-Stik League Northern Premier.
