Arsenal star Santi Cazorla was delighted that Mesut Özil decided to join the Gunners and admitted he did not think the Germany international would actually make the switch.

Cazorla spoke highly of Özil's talents and claimed his arrival, in a £42.4million deal that smashed the club transfer record, was like "a gift" to Arsene Wenger's squad.

The 25-year-old impressed in his first few Arsenal outings and Cazorla went so far as to describe his new teammate as having a "magic" touch on the training ground and in matches.

"He brings us something different, because he’s all talent, what he does is magic. It seems like he’s not there and then he changes a game with one control, one pass," he told El Pais.

"It surprised us that he came to Arsenal, because you don’t expect him to leave Madrid and then choose our team. For us he’s a gift."

Özil made a blistering start to his Arsenal career but has struggled to impose himself as much in recent matches, which has led to some criticism, especially after a particularly subdued showing in the loss to Manchester United in their last Premier League fixture.

Gunners fans had been very excited about the prospect of seeing Cazorla and Özil team up in midfield, but the diminutive Spaniard has only recently returned from injury and is yet to find his best form.

Özil's disappointing performance against Manchester United was partially explained afterwards when it was revealed that he was suffering from the flu-like illness that had affected a number of Wenger's players ahead of the trip to Old Trafford.

Germany travel to Wembley to face England in a friendly on Tuesday evening, but Roy Hodgson's men will be spared the threat of Özil, as the manager Joachim Löw has decided to rest him for the match.
