San Francisco 49ers linebacker Ahmad Brooks was left fuming after his late hit on New Orleans Saints quarterback was deemed illegal and eventually led to the 49ers forfeiting the game.
Brees had struggled to get his game going at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome and the Saints looked to be heading to their third defeat of the regular season before Brooks was called up for his round-the-neck hit on the veteran QB.
That allowed the Saints to level the scores at 20-20 with around three minutes left, before under-fire kicker Garrett Hartley won the game for the home side with time running out.
Brooks was furious with the call afterwards, and insists the game is going soft.
"I didn't hit him with my hand or my helmet," Brooks is quoted as saying by the San Francisco Chronicle. "I basically bear-hugged him. That's just how football is played. I think this s*** is bull****. Football, the way they call stuff these days, it's watered down. It ain't real no more."
He added he believed the call was only made because the Saints were at home.
"It was Drew Brees. And maybe the officials were for the New Orleans Saints a little bit more than the 49ers. I think it's B.S., man," he said.
Understandably, Brees felt the call was correct, and admitted that he was a little dazed afterwards.
"All I remember is just getting clothes-lined in the chin, and as I'm on the ground I'm saying, 'That's got to be a flag,''' Brees said.
"One of my teammates kind of picked me up and said, 'Are you all right?' And he said, 'Don't worry, there's a flag.' I said, 'All right, good.''
The Saints extended their record to 8-2 thanks to the 23-20 win last night, while the 49ers fell to 6-4.
