Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has lavished praise on Wayne Rooney, reports The Sun.

The former Red Devils shot stopper has revealed that he speaks to the Manchester United star on a regular basis - due to his close affiliation with the club.

Schmeichel also admitted that he was always confident that the 28-year-old would stay at Old Trafford - despite speculation linking Rooney with a move away from the Premier League champions during the summer.

Rooney has been in sensational form for Manchester United this season, scoring seven goals in 15 games and combining brilliantly with strike partner Robin van Persie in recent weeks.

Former Old Trafford hero Schmeichel said on the in-form Manchester United star: “I always knew he would not be for sale. I have certainly never had any doubt over about Rooney’s qualities. He is proving he is one of the best player in the world.

“For Wayne, it will have been good having to prove himself all over again. He is tearing the Premier League apart. I speak to him regularly.

“I have always been a very big fan. He is a fantastic striker. He gives you goals. He scores simple goals, beautiful goals.

“I think he is a top, top class players. He won’t be leaving. When you have been a player, you understand what is happening on the pitch.

“It amazes me Rooney’s ability has even been called into question."

The Sun suggested last week that Manchester United were planning to open talks with Rooney's representatives over a new £250,000-a-week deal - and Schmeichel has backed the England international to commit his long-term future to the Red Devils.

He added: “Deep down, Wayne Rooney wants to be liked, like everyone else. I think United is the best place for him. I am happy he stayed.

“David Moyes was left with a situation with Rooney but he has dealt with that."

Rooney will pick up his 88th England against Germany tonight, before returning to Manchester to prepare for the Red Devils' weekend fixture against Cardiff City.
