Despite possessing an abundance of the best attacking players in the Premier League with incredible ability on the ball, some of Chelsea's players do lack the same quality.
Two of these players happen to be the full-backs that Jose Mourinho has mainly deployed at the start of the season.
Branislav Ivanovic and Ashley Cole maybe considered great defenders, but lack the attacking ability that a team like Chelsea desperately require.
All of the creative attackers, which play in the three behind the striker, all have the tendency to come infield rather than providing width.
With the game so narrow, the onus is on the full-backs to create the width and be an out ball. They do give the team width, but rarely provide any quality on the ball that's needed.
According to Squakwa; only two of Ivanovic's nine crosses were met by a Chelsea player’s head against West Brom. Teams have recognised that the Serbian, who is naturally a centre-back, is weak with the ball at his feet, and have often let him have the ball, marking more talented players.
Against Newcastle he completed a weak 79 per cent of his passes – however, this actually increased his average for the season from 75 per cent to 76 per cent, again, according to Squakwa.
Ashley Cole has been dropped due to his poor performances this year, not just due to his poor contribution going forward. He has been average defensively and he may struggle to regain his spot in the team if Cesar Azpilicueta continues his fine defensive performances. Due to the fact it is his less preferred side, Azpilicueta offers little going forward at left-back.
It will be interesting to see how much of a chance Ryan Bertrand is given when he returns from his injury. If Mourinho doesn't feel confident in giving Bertrand a regular start, he may have to look at bringing in a new left-back in January with the likes of Luke Shaw, Fabio Coentrao and Alberto Moreno being linked with a move.
If one of these players does arrive, Azpilicueta can be re-stored in his favoured right-back spot and Chelsea will have two full-backs who can do something positive with the ball.
