Manchester United face missing out on the signing of long-term target Ezequiel Garay, as he has been made the No.1 target by Rafael Benitez.
Sources in Portugal report that the Napoli boss is ready to bring in a host of players to strengthen his squad, but is eyeing Garay as a priority signing in order to improve his defence.
United have long chased the former Real Madrid centre-half, and at various points in the past have been on the edge of signing him themselves.
David Moyes has continued the interest that Sir Alex Ferguson maintained in the Argentinian defender, but now faces stiff competition from Napoli, who are reluctant to activate his €20million release clause but may have to in order to push a deal through.
Garay is wanted by a number of European giants and has also been on the radar of Barcelona and United's bitter rivals Manchester City.
Moyes will know that he needs to act fast if he is to salvage any chance of signing the 26-year-old, but Benitez's pursuit will more than certainly pose problems.
