Liverpool defender Jose Enrique looks set for a long spell on the sidelines after manager Brendan Rodgers admitted the Spaniard could need surgery.

The former Newcastle full-back had been suffering with the niggle for a long period of time now, but Rodgers has now admitted that his first choice left-back could now be facing a long spell on the sidelines.

Enrique only returned to action on November 9th in the victory over Fulham, but it seems that Enrique never made a full recovery from his injury.

Speaking to TalkSport, Liverpool manager Rodgers said: "Jose Enrique has been struggling for a little while with an injury.

"He will probably need an operation- it's a blow for us because he is a very talented player."

Enrique's set-back means that it will be down to Ahly Sissokho to fill-in the left-back berth.

And with a key run of games in the build-up to Christmas, Reds manager Rodgers will hope that the injury will not disrupt his sides progression in the race for the title.
