Premiers Hawthorn Hawks have taken a draft risk by selecting controversial Western Australian Dayle Garlett at pick number 38.

Garlett had been tipped to be a top 10 pick in last seasons draft, but a number of off-field indiscretions meant no club was willing to call out his name in 2012.

One year on and Hawthorn have decided to gamble and give Garlett his chance, unquestionably a first-round talent in ability terms and with vast potential, the Hawks will be hoping Garlett can grow under their leadership group.

With tutors such as Premiership stars such as Luke Hodge, Sam Mitchell and Jarryd Roughead, the Hawks posses the perfect environment to allow Garlett to blossom into an AFL superstar.

Hawthorn have stated that Garlett starts with a clean slate and hope that he can shed his bad-boy, party loving image. After being overlooked at last years draft, Garlett has been invited to train in a trial period with Essendon, although a booze-filled night out ended their interest.

Coach Alistair Clarkson has been in constant contact since last seasons draft and believes Garlett has come a long way since the disappointment of the 2012 draft.

Time will tell if this roll of the draft dice will pay off. The Hawks have taken a successful punt on precocious Western Australian talent before, a certain Lance Franklin springs to mind, and will hope with the right nurturing and encouragement, Garlett can light up the MCG like those before him.
