Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is desperate to bring Real Madrid duo Karim Benzema and Raphael Varane to the Emirates Stadium, according to Punto Pelota journalist François Gallardo.
However, Gallardo believes that the chances of Wenger landing either player - particularly during the January transfer window - are less than slim.
"An English team will try and strengthen in the winter by turning to Madrid to try to take two players of the Santiago Bernabéu," Gallardo told the Punto Pelota viewers. "Arsenal want to reinforce their squad in the winter and will go for Benzema and Varane.
"Karim is the ‘darling’ of Wenger, who is obsessed with him, and Raphael is also admired, but the operation is not viable.
"Karim, obviously, will not leave in January. It is unfeasible. The other player that Arsene has in mind is Raphael Varane. Wenger’s obsession will come to the fore in January, but neither transfer is workable."
Benzema, 25, was strongly linked with a move to Arsenal earlier this year. However, with Real Madrid low on numbers in the striker department, Los Blancos boss Carlo Ancelotti is unlikely to agree to a sale.
Not only that, but the France international has enjoyed a good few weeks at the Bernabeu after rediscovering his shooting boots.
As for the highly-rated 20-year-old centre-back Varane, it seems extremely unlikely that Real Madrid would sell one of their most promising youngsters, regardless of the fee involved.
Situations change, though, and who knows? Perhaps Wenger might have more luck with Benzema or Varane next summer.
