Arsenal look set to continue their pursuit of Romania and Getafe striker Ciprian Marica, according to the Metro.

Arsene Wenger is looking for a prolific striker to add to his ranks this January, amid rumours that he is chasing Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema and Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke.

But Wenger has identified the Getafe forward as a more financially reasonable option, but one that will bring him similar success.

Spanish reports last weekend documented that London rivals Tottenham Hotspur were leading the race for Marica, but it now seems that Wenger’s outfit are the team in the ascendency for his signature.

Wenger is looking for a strike partner to take some of the strain off the shoulders of Olivier Giroud, who has been at the heart of the Gunners’ goals this season.

With Theo Walcott becoming increasingly close to a return from injury, Wenger is confident that the signing of Marica could be the one needed in January that could help his team to a hotly contested Premier League title.

Wenger’s side beat surprise Champions League chasers Southampton this weekend, a result that saw he side remain at the summit of the Premier League
