Oh, we do rather like a good Twitter rumour, and the latest one is rather juicy. It is being claimed that Cristiano Ronaldo is nailed on to win the Ballon d'Or, which closes its voting this week, after FIFA cancelled a photoshoot with Franck Ribery.

Ronaldo and Ribery, along with Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi, are expected to be named on the three-man shortlist when it is announced following the vote, which ends on Friday, and the former would seem set to emerge victorious at the gala early next year.

Twitter is awash with speculation following an assertion from Spanish TV show Punto Pelota, renowned to be somewhat unreliable, that Ronaldo is a dead cert for the crown following Ribery's apparent snubbing.

The Bayern Munich winger, it is claimed, had been due to attend a photocall with FIFA in the build-up to the awards, but this was cancelled on Tuesday, leading to suggestions Ribery will not win the top prize.

Barcelona are also reported to believe that Ronaldo is destined to wrest the Ballon d'Or from the clutches of Messi, who had won it for the previous four years.

The bookmakers may have caught wind of this, with the best price on the Real Madrid icon to win his second such trophy a slim 3-1 on. Ribery is second favourite at 7-2, while Messi is further back on 9/1.
