John Arne Riise has been told by Fulham that he can leave the club on a free transfer in January.
The 33-year-old defender has only featured five times for the Premier League strugglers, with his last appearance for the club coming back in August.
Martin Jol has installed former England international Kieran Richardson as his first choice left-back with Venezuelan central defender Fernando Amorebieta providing cover in his absence.
Jol says that the Norwegian who is set to be out of contract in the summer can quit the club when the transfer window opens in the new year.
The under pressure Dutchman feels that it would be in the former Liverpool player's best favour if he moves away from the club in order to seek regular football.
He told the Fulham Chronicle: "I feel John Arne Riise is such a good guy and a good player that he deserves to play. I can't give him that because Kieran is more energetic, which is what I need.
"If he's not playing he's at an age where he should play games. That's his idea as well."
The former Tottenham manager has also hinted that his reluctance and capability to play in other positions across the park has led him to make the decision to allow him to leave.
"He can only play left-back and I need players on the bench who can play in different positions."
It has already been understood that a whole host of clubs in the Championship as well as in his native Norway are interested in signing the well proven defender who featured over 300 times for Liverpool between 2001-2008.
