Manchester United should sign Luke Shaw over Moreno

Manchester United are in the market for a left-back who can replicate the success of Patrice Evra.

The Frenchman has been a fantastic servant to Manchester United since making his move from Monaco to Old Trafford in January 2006.

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson managed to sign the France international for a mere £5.5million just under eight years ago, which will go down as one of the bargain deals of the century.

Evra is still one of the first names on David Moyes' teamsheets - but he is out of contract at the end of the season and he has already said that he will not be extending his stay at Old Trafford due to 'personal reasons'.

That leaves Moyes with no choice but to dip into either the January or summer transfer market to sign a left-back who is capable of playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world.

Moyes already has Fabio and Alex Buttner at his disposal, but they are both hugely inconsistent and are unable to replicate the high standards set by Evra.

Manchester United boss Moyes has been linked with making a move for a number of left-backs - with the likes of Leighton Baines, Fabio Coentrao and Luke Shaw all said to be on the Scotsman's shortlist.

Moyes made moves for both Coentrao and Baines in the summer, but was unable to complete a deal for the Real Madrid star and could not convince Everton into selling the England full-back.

The former Everton boss is likely to change tact in January by making a move for either Shaw or Sevilla full-back Alberto Moreno.

Both players are said to be available for a price in the region of £25million, which is a hell of a lot for a left-back - but a fee that is worth spending if they can fill the void left by Evra.

Moreno and Shaw - who are 21 and 18 respectively - would be much better value for money than Baines, who Everton would only be willing to sell if a bid of over £20million came in for him.

Shaw is the better option because he would not take time to settle into life in England and would not pine for a move to Real Madrid or Barcelona, like Moreno would if either side came in for him.

Both Moreno and Shaw are excellent candidates to replace Evra - but the latter would be the best option to take the Frenchman's number three shirt at the end of the season.
