City must improve away from home

There are many superlatives mentioned when talking about Manchester City's home form so far this season.

In fact, pundits and fans alike are basing their title predictions solely on City's ability to destroy teams at the Etihad.

They have of course been superb on their on patch thus far - a crushing 6-0 demolition of Tottenham and a 4-1 derby day success over Manchester United highlight this - but it will mean nothing if they cannot find some form on the road.

All four of City's defeats have come away from home, and not all have been against stellar opposition.

The loss at Stamford Bridge in calamitous fashion last month aside, the other three have all been against teams the Citizens would expect to beat.

No disrespect to the likes of Cardiff City, Sunderland and Aston Villa but if you are to win a Premier League title these away games are the bread and butter of the campaign, and nothing but a victory should suffice.

It's all well and good hammering the likes of Spurs and United at home but these results will mean little if Pellegrini can't get his men playing the style of football they do at the Etihad on the road.

This is a hurdle the Chilean manager will have to negotiate, but he will no doubt find this harder as the season goes on as they look to challenge on all four frontiers.

Qualifying for the knockout phase of the Champions League for the first time in their history means that Pellegrini has the inevitable rotation of his star-studded squad to contend with. You can hardly imagine Samir Nasri to be best pleased if told to warm the bench.

Making the next round of Europe's elite club competition will force Pellegrini into changes he might not want to make, and he won't be able to sacrifice players when they travel to the so-called lesser teams later on in the campaign.

This could prove his downfall. One thing's for sure, if City don't start picking up results away from home, they will fall short come what May.
