Manchester United are keen for star striker Wayne Rooney to sign a new contract before Christmas, according to the Manchester Evening News.
England international Rooney, who scored his seventh and eighth Premier League goals of the season against Tottenham on Sunday, is currently playing some of the best football of his career - but his current deal at Old Trafford is set to expire in 18 months' time.
The Red Devils are subsequently keen for the 28-year-old to pen a contract extension, which would tie him to the club until his early thirties.
By then Rooney is likely to have become Manchester United's all-time top scorer. The former Everton forward needs 42 goals to tie level with Bobby Charlton, who scored 249 goals during his 17-year career at Old Trafford.
Rooney currently sits fourth in the club's all-time top scorer list, behind Jack Rowley, Denis Law and Charlton.
A firm favourites with the Manchester United faithful, the club will hope to bring some festive cheer to supporters by announcing Rooney's contract extension.
