Tom Daley has come out in an impassioned video to fans.

The 19-year-old from Plymouth, who won bronze in the 10-metre platform at last summer’s Olympics, declared his sexuality in an emotional interview to camera on YouTube.

"In an ideal world I wouldn't be doing this video because it shouldn't matter," he said.

"Of course I still fancy girls, but right now I'm dating a guy and I couldn't be happier. I just feel safe, and it really does feel right.

"Is it a big deal? I don't think so. It's going to be big but I wanted to say something."

Daley was one of the faces of the 2012 Olympics in London, and has brought diving to the mainstream both in competitive and entertainment format.

He shot to national attention in Beijing in 2008, competing in both an individual and synchronised event at the Olympics in China.

Whilst medals weren’t won, the teenager had given notice of his huge potential, and he went on to claim World Championship gold the following year, beating great rival Qiu Bo to the 10m title in Rome.

He’s also won multiple British, Junior World and Commonwealth titles, and is now a Television star in his own right with the second series of 'Splash' - a diving competition featuring celebrities - set to air on ITV next year.

Daley is one of the first high-profile athletes to come out during his career; following in the footsteps of NBA star Jason Collins after his announcement in April.
