With Standard Liege cruising towards a 5-0 victory over Lierse, it seemed like very little could go wrong for the Belgian Pro League leaders.

However, that all changed with just a couple of minutes left on the clock, as midfielder William Vainqueur saw red for a rather bizarre kick to the face.

The former French U21 international attempted a flick over his own head but lost possession, and then flicked both legs behind him in an effort to win control of the ball back.

He failed in his efforts though, and instead managed to catch Rahid Bourabia flush in the face.

With blood surrounding the midfielder’s mouth, the referee wasted no time in brandishing the red card – and it’s hard to argue that Vainqueur didn’t deserve it for his indiscretion.
