The sign of a great player are those who stand up to be counted on the big occasions.
The very best are those who rise up time and time again, to put in the most tremendous of displays on the grandest of stages.
Whether it be an unbeatable goalkeeping display such as Jan Tomaszewski's against England in 1973, a marauding midfield masterclass like Roy Keane's away at Juventus in 1999 or Diego Maradona's dominance at the World Cup in 1986, the greatest individual displays always go down in history.
It's fair to say that 2013 has not exactly been short of them. Football today possesses some of the most gifted and talented footballer's of all time, and this year it seems that every single one of them has, at some point, gone the extra mile to make the game their own and lead their side to victory.
And remember, the most important rule of all is the more important the game the better!
