The three front runners for the Ballon d’Or will all think that they are in line for success after blitzing the world with their performances on the pitch.
Lionel Messi had a very impressive goals haul last season, leading Barcelona to the La Liga title, whereas Cristiano Ronaldo has played exceptionally well, but does not have any silverware to gloat about and meanwhile, Franck Ribery led Bayern to win the treble, a feat which in any other year would almost certainly secure the prestigious Ballon d’Or award.
The Bookies favourite so far is Ronaldo, starting 68 games for club and country last year, scoring 62 goals, as well as getting 14 assists, the only problem with Ronaldo, is his lack of silverware. Real Madrid were runners up in both the Copa Del Rey and La Liga.
Lionel Messi managed 75 goals in 58 matches last season, a far more impressive record, and with the addition of the La Liga title, has a very good case for why he should be crowned winner. Last season, Ronaldo scored more goals than Messi in Europe, and was only 5 goals behind in the total scored for their clubs.
Ronaldo’s goal scoring feat may not match up to Messi’s but Ronaldo is a player who delivers time and time again, getting goals in vital games like his recent hat trick against Sweden, and also proving to be increasingly selfless in his play.
Ronaldo, seems to also escape injury, only missing a couple of matches after 18 starts already this season, Ronaldo also doesn’t seem to have a lull in form, whereas Messi has struggled this season, picking up a hamstring problem, due to this and a lull of form, Messi has scored 14 goals for club this season, opposed to Ronaldo’s 24.
Then we have Ribery, playing for Bayern who, just ahead of Dortmund, are best in their league and far superior to many of their opponents. Ribery helped Bayern win the Bundesliga, the DFB-Pokal and of course the UEFA Champions league. However, Ribery only managed starting 43 games and scoring 11 goals. He did however managed to get 14 assists in the Bundesliga.
These three candidates can all expect to win, but what is more important? Putting in 100% every game? Having an incredible goal scoring feat? Or winning trophies? My money would go on Ronaldo, for superb effort and desire just to play the game.
