Premier League champions Manchester United face stiff competition from Borussia Dortmund for Benfica midfielder Nemanja Matic in January, according to the Mirror.
The Red Devils, who are desperate to strengthen their squad once the transfer window re-opens, have identified the former Chelsea reserve as the solution to their midfield problems..
United boss David Moyes, who watched his side slump to their fourth Premier League defeat against former club Everton on Wednesday night, spent £27.5m on Belgium international Marouane Fellaini in the summer.
However, during the same transfer window he unsuccessfully attempted to sign Spanish midfielders Cesc Fabregas and Ander Herrera from Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao, respectively.
The Scot remains keen to further bolster his midfield, with Michael Carrick struggling with an Achilles injury and Fellaini requiring a wrist operation.
However, with last season's Champions League runners-up Borussia Dortmund interested in Matic, United will need to act sooner rather than later if they're to strike a deal with Benfica and the player.
