Arsenal target scores comedy own goal

German Under-21 international Sebastian Rode has reached the transfer shortlists of both Arsenal and Bayern Munich with his performances in recent seasons, but hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons in the German Cup last night.

Rode's Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt were enjoying a 2-0 procession at home to lowly Sandhausen in the DFB Pokal, until Rode gave the underdogs hope by inexplicably putting into his own net.

The versatile defensive midfielder collected the ball inside his own penalty area before turning towards trouble, quickly deciding to flick back towards goal rather than be closed down quickly by a Sandhausen striker.

That tactic proved disastrous though, as Rode sent a low effort sailing inside the near post for one of the most bizarre own goals of the campaign to date.

Luckily for Rode his error did not affect Frankfurt's safe progression to the next round, with Joselu scoring a hat-trick in a 4-2 win for the hosts.

A long-term £7.5m transfer target for the Gunners, Rode had shrugged off an ankle problem to feature in the tie, but may wish he'd stayed on the sidelines.

The starlet's moment of shame was captured for all to relive in a video you can view at the top of the page.
