Topping this list is Manchester United legend Scholes. The former England stalwart finally retired from professional football for good at the end of last season and, quite frankly, his loss and an evident lack of adequate replacements has left the Red Devils reeling.

Having initially retired in May 2011, the gifted midfielder was convinced to return to the United fold after a string of injuries decimated the first-team squad. He proved every bit as influential on return and David Moyes will surely be wishing that he could issue a similar SOS call to solve his side's chronic lack of creativity in the middle of the park.
