8. Xabi Alonso

Having left Liverpool for Real Madrid back in the summer of 2009, Alonso left a gaping void in the heart of the midfield at Anfield. 

With his extraordinary vision, canny knack for an important pass and eye for goal, Alonso's unrivalled abilities are evidently not easy to replace.

Although Brendan Rodgers' side's strong start to the season suggests that the Northern Irishman - who took the reigns last summer - is on the right path to successfully ushering in a welcome new dawn on Merseyside, Alonso's absence is still felt.
