Liverpool could be about to make a significant addition to their squad, with reports suggesting that the Premier League title chasers are set to bid for Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka.

According to The Metro, Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is keen to find a suitable replacement for the legendary Steven Gerrard as the 33-year-old edges ever closer to a fitting retirement.

The same publications claims that Swiss international Xhaka - whose talents will reportedly command a fee of around the £20 million mark - tops a list of potential replacements, with Liverpool supposedly set to make an offer when the transfer window finally re-opens once again in January.

Xhaka, a 21-year-old midfielder born in Kosovo, has become an instrumental figure at Stadion im Borussia-Park, starting in all but one of Monchengladbach's Bundesliga games so far during the 2013/14 campaign.

Were Xhaka to join Liverpool, the former Basel star, who moved to Germany in 2012, would certainly have to have a massive impact at Anfield to have any chance of successfully filling the sizeable that will eventually be created by Gerrard's departure.

The 33-year-old, who has been with Liverpool for the duration of a truly stellar 17-year career, has developed a deserved reputation as one of the most enduring icons in the club's illustrious history.
