Central midfield has been Manchester United's main problem for as long as most of us can remember now.
David Moyes spent £27.5m on Marouane Fellaini in an attempt to bolster the team's midfielder - and, to an extent, it has. But it's clear that the Red Devils still need more.
Anderson's days at Old Trafford look numbered, Michael Carrick isn't getting any younger, Tom Cleverley is not progressing in the way many expected him to, while Ryan Giggs recently celebrated his 40th birthday.
Moyes must make another big-name midfield signing, either in January or in the summer.
5. Alex Song | Barcelona
It's sometimes easy to forget that Alex Song is a very good footballer.
The Cameroon international proved that during his six-year spell at Arsenal.
It was always going to be difficult for Song at Barcelona, and so it's proved, but he could do an excellent - and essential - job for Manchester United back in the Premier League.
4. Koke | Atletico Madrid
Koke has been one of Atletico Madrid's standout performers this season.
The 21-year-old Spain international would be a fabulous signing for the Red Devils - but it'll be almost impossible for them to sign him in January.
Next summer is slightly more realistic, although expect Real Madrid and Barcelona to also be interested if he continues lighting up the Vicente Calderon.
3. Daniele De Rossi | AS Roma
Manchester United desperately require some midfield leadership. It's now eight years since Roy Keane left Old Trafford - and Daniele De Rossi could be the long-overdue replacement the club have been crying out for.
The Italy international is now 30 years old, but he's still got plenty of years left in him.
De Rossi is a true competitor - and his will to win would benefit the Red Devils immensely.
2. Paul Pogba | Juventus
Paul Pogba shouldn't be on this list. He should still be a Manchester United player.
Anyway, the fact is he isn't, but David Moyes should look to bring the supremely talented 20-year-old back to Old Trafford is there's even the slightest possibility of doing so.
Would he want to return to Manchester United? It's doubtful. However, he knows that he would walk back into the Premier League champions' starting XI.
1. Ilkay Gundogan | Borussia Dortmund
Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen was recently asked what midfielder the Red Devils needed most. His response? "Ilkay Gundogan".
The 23-year-old, who has become a key player at Borussia Dortmund in recent seasons, would be the perfect addition to the Red Devils' midfield.
He is assured in possession, he can tackle, pass and score goals.
Gundogan has yet to sign a contract extension with last season's Champions League finalist, so United should try their luck with a sizeable bid.
