Robin van Persie has handed in a transfer request at Manchester United according to reports.
The fact Lawrenson started it begs the question, is this true? And if it is, is it a tactic by Manchester United to distract rivals in January? Or does van Persie want a return to Arsenal, now they're looking like possibly title contenders?
The most likely reason if it is true is that van Persie wants more first team football, and possibly believes that Moyes favours Rooney after their spell at Everton was cut short.
Robin has been reported injured and Rooney has been in great form. Moyes however would surely be a fool to let van Persie leave because one very versatile player is on form as a striker, Moyes could also drop the one striker system that hasn't been vastly successful to allow van Persie some more time.
Another possibility is that Van Persie wants to join a Spanish club to give Holland a better chance at the World Cup vs Spain in the group stage, as well as to get used to the Chilean style of three centre backs which is more used in Spain and in Europe.
Probably favourites to sign him would be Real Madrid who would surely jump at the chance of a cut-price deal. The problem if Van Persie leaves in January is he couldn't play in the Champions League.
Maybe there are talks within United and Liverpool that they'll bid for Suarez and that's why Mark Lawrenson knows, possibly van Persie will go the other way, very unlikely but not impossible.
The source originated from the Irish Mirror talking to Mark Lawrenson and the former Liverpool defender stated: There’s all sorts of rumours coming out of the training ground at the moment.
“One or two of the press boys that I know that cover Manchester United, they’re even saying that the big whisper is Van Persie might have asked for a transfer on Tuesday.
“So if that happens, what a mess that’s going to be for David Moyes.”
Perhaps Mark Lawrenson is just trying to annoy United fans and indeed the club, but if it's true then it's massive news. The most likely destinations for Robin are probably back to Arsenal, Juventus and Real Madrid, but where would you like to see him go and where could you see him going? Chelsea, Barca, Bayern Munich?
