Championship outfit Reading managed a nine-game unbeaten run when playing at the Madejski Stadium - a run which was halted abruptly by Bournemouth this weekend.

It was a surprising result to say the least as Reading managed to hold Queens Park Rangers to a 1-1 draw there earlier last month. But Bournemouth, who are currently 16th in the Championship, somehow guided their way to a 2-1 victory on Saturday afternoon.

Lewis Grabban, who is the Cherries’ top scorer with eight, netted the first goal and Matt Ritchie scored soon after. Only Reading talisman and impact substitute Adam Le Fondre managed a weak reply in the form of a trademark injury-time goal.

Where does this leave Reading? The promotion chasers are sitting uncomfortably on the wall between the last play off place and mid-table abyss. They are currently level on points with Blackpool and Nottingham Forrest, the latter they beat away only two games ago.

Adkins’ target was to be in the top three at Christmas but it looks as though those hopes are slowly fading away. Reading have lacked consistency so far this term, a quality which is need to do well in this tough league.

Reading have not had a single stand-out goalscorer this season. Le Fondre is on seven whilst Pavel Pogrebnyak and Danny Guthrie are on five and four respectively. For a team filled with Premier League pedigree, it’s a shame to see Reading not scoring as many goals as their fellow promotion contenders.

Le Fondre, who is known as the Luis Suarez of the Championship, has yet to provide the goods for Reading. Maybe it’s time to look towards Billy Sharp, the Southampton loanee, to score the much needed goals.
