Arsene Wenger is reported to have dispatched scouts to run the rule over young midfielder Davy Klaassen during Ajax's victory over NAC Bredain the Eredivisie on Saturday.
The Daily Mail claims Arsenal representatives were in attendance at the Amsterdam Arena with Klaassen their main focus, and the 20-year-old will have undoubtedly impressed after netting a hat-trick in the 4-0 victory.
Klaassen has scored six goals in 10 appearances for Ajax this season and, perhaps even more exciting for Arsenal fans, the Dutchman has been compared to Gunners legend Dennis Bergkamp.
The player may operate more regularly in midfield, but his creativity and eye for goal has drawn comparisons with Bergkamp, who is currently on the staff at Ajax.
Klaassen's breakthrough this season has predictably led to a plethora of scots making trips to watch him in action, but Arsenal will surely hope their relationship with Bergkamp may place them ahead of competitors for the player's signature.
It remains to be seen whether the Gunners will formalise their interest in Klaassen during the January transfer window, but Wenger is expected to make reinforcements before the deadline.
The recruitment of another midfielder is likely to be a low priority, with the acquisition of another forward to support Olivier Giroud more of a pressing concern.
