Spanish champions Barcelona are going to make a bid to sign defender David Luiz from English giants Chelsea.

According to the Daily Star, the Catalans have been tracking Luiz since last summer, but saw their attempts to sign him blocked by the Chelsea hierarchy.

Yet this doesn't seem to effect Barca's interest, and they now look set to reignite their interest with a £29million bid once the January transfer window reopens.

With Carles Puyol in his middle-thirties, Gerard Pique injury-prone and Javier Mascherano just not good enough, Gerardo Martino will be looking to reinforce his defence, and sees Luiz as the man for the job.

Luiz has fallen down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge, and will probably seek a move elsewhere if he continues to be third choice.

Luiz has only made five appearances this season and Jose Mourinho doesn't look keen to keep the Brazilian in west London.

On the other hand, Barcelona will definitely benefit from Chelsea's loss and Luiz could solve the cracks the Catalans have.
