Alabama kick Cade Foster was left distraught after two missed field goals helped Auburn to defeat the Crimson Tide last month.

At that stage Alabama were the number one team in the nation, and the public and media heaped much of the blame for the loss on Foster, who also had a third field goal attempt blocked.

His teammates rallied around him in support, as did much of the university alumni, fans and coaching staff.

But it turns out President George W Bush was also watching the game, and offered his support in a private letter to the Alabama kicker dated December 3, 2013.

Foster tweeted: "Framing this" along with a picture of the note from the United States' 43rd president.

It read: "Dear Cade (#43), Life has its setbacks. I know! However, you will be a stronger human with time. I wish you all the best. Sincerely - another 43."

The 34-28 defeat to Auburn was one of the most dramatic games of all-time - a missed Foster field goal was returned for a touchdown as time ran out at the end of the game.

As a result, Auburn went on to the SEC Championship Game - where they beat Missouri - and they will now face Florida State next month for the chance to win a BCS National Championship.
