Chelsea have lost out to Bayer Leverkusen for the signature of German Under-19 international Julian Brandt, according to the Daily Mail.

The German side announced they have secured the 17-year-old’s services on their club website and are poised to offer the forward a five-and-a-half year contract in January.

Wolfsburg insisted the player would not be open to a move until the summer but in October Brandt turned down a new deal with the club.

The highly-rated youngster has scored 22 goals for Wolfsburg’s Under-19 team since the start of last season.

This opened the door for Chelsea and a number of other German suitors, but it was Leverkusen who eventually clinched the forward.

Leverkusen’s sporting director Rudi Voller said: “Julian Brandt is one of the most talented players in German football. His signing is a great investment in the future of Bayer Leverkusen."

The left-winger has played for the Under-19 national team six times this year and scored one goal in the process.
