Sissoko takes accidental swipe at referee

Newcastle United midfielder Moussa Sissoko laid out referee Mike Jones after accidentally punching the Premier League official in the face during Saturday's 1-1 draw with Southampton.

The bizarre incident - which occurred in the 89th minute of the clash at St James' Park - saw Jones take a theatrical tumble, after trying to break up an altercation between the Magpies star and Saints goalkeeper Paolo Gazzaniga.

Thankfully for Sissoko, the man in the middle realised that the Newcastle star had caught him in the face by sheer accident, and after a few minutes laughed off the action without handing out any further punishment to the player.

It proved to be the first of two peculiar incidents that transpired in the closing stages of the match, after coaches from both teams' benches also came together in a fiery confrontation during the six minutes of added time.

Once it was over, both sides took a share of the spoils, after Jay Rodriguez had cancelled out Yoan Gouffran's first-half opener, leaving Newcastle manager Alan Pardew fairly happy with the result, and allowed him to reflect jovially on the coming together between Sissoko and referee Jones.

"The ref has got a bloody nose, he is trying to patch himself up for the Christmas party," the former Southampton manager was quoted saying in his post-match interview by the Daily Mail.

"But he took it in good heart, really, I have to say. He realised it was a little bit of a flick out at the goalie, who had flicked out at him [Sissoko].

"It was all a bit silly, but unfortunately he ended up with a bloody nose."
