It's no secret that Manchester United have endured one of their worst starts in their recent history, as David Moyes takes time to make his presence felt at Old Trafford.

Having dropped more points already this season after fifteen games than they did in all of last season, fans are starting to wonder whether Moyes' nightmare start may be a precursor to a spell in the dolldrums.

United's horror start hasn't been aided in the slightest by the injury of star-striker Robin van Persie.

When United stole Van Persie from under Arsene Wenger's nose last season, those same aforementioned pessimists pointed to his recurring injury problems and his age. A season later, these both seem to be catching up with him.

On the sidelines for another month, let's look at some possible alternatives as United look to build for the long-term.

Marco Reus

While many would point to another Borussia Dortmund striker, Robert Lewandowski - as a better replacement, Reus' overall game makes him the perfect fit for United.

With incredible speed, fantastic dribbling ability and the ability to finish, Reus would slot in seamlessly into RVP's position.

Furthermore, his speed would add another dimension to a United team that looks lethargic at the moment.

While he would still score in spades, he would also be able to play on the wings if it were required of him. He isn't a true striker, but every great United player has more than one dimension to his game.

Karim Benzema

Yes, he has been called the French Fernando Torres and yes, he might never reach the level of consistency required of a "United Striker," but one would be foolish to deny that Benzema has potential.

While he may miss the occasional chance from close range, he more than makes up for it with both the sheer quality and quantity of some of his goals. He is a penalty-box striker who also has the ability to be a proven link to midfield.

Furthermore, he is two-footed and tall enough to be an aerial threat. In looking for a like-for-like replacement, few are as similar to Van Persie as Karim Benzema.

Diego Costa

Costa has absolutely lit up La Liga this year. This is best evidenced by the fact that his only competition for top scorer is Cristiano Ronaldo. Frankly, nobody saw him reaching the heights he has this season.

Whether he can keep it up or not is another problem altogether but he has to potential to bag 30+ goals a season for a top team. He has great positional sense and while is a poacher, has a rasping long-shot as well.

Furthermore, he would offer the aerial ability and challenge both when defending and attacking corners. While it is doubtful as to whether Atletico would be willing to sell, Costa looks like he could do the job at Old Trafford.
