Marcos Maidana tore up the formbook on Saturday night to become welterweight champion in sensational style, dismantling the previously perfect Adrien Broner with a performance full of predatory purpose.
The Argentine knockout artist was confident from the outset despite Broner entering the contest with a flawless 27-0 record, landing a huge overhand right to stagger the 'Problem' in the very first round.
Maidana followed that up with persistent pressure which produced a memorable knockdown in the second round, sending Broner tumbling between the ropes with a powerful leaning left hook.
Broner got back up to trade shots with the South American slugger but was no match for Maidana's power, hitting the canvas for second time in the eighth round.
'El Chino' followed that up with an illegal headbutt to the jaw that had Broner back on the deck soon after, but after a three-minute delay Maidana regained his composure and secured a unanimous decision win.
All three judges gave Maidana a victory he merited by a wide margin, with Broner's invincible aura snatched away in a fantastic display by a proven puncher now fully deserving of consideration among the welterweight elite.
Maidana has a number of options available following that stunning win, including rematches against Broner or Amir Kahn, with the pot at the end of the rainbow a potential future clash with Floyd Mayweather
