Premier League: Top 8 greatest comebacks (1)

Published 1 Comments

While Manchester United's 3-0 victory over Aston Villa on Sunday was a vitally important result for the reigning Premier League champions, the match will also be fondly remembered as the game in which midfielder Darren Fletcher finally made his long-awaited comeback.

The combative Scotsman, who had surgery on a chronic bowel condition in January, last played in the Premier League on Boxing Day 2012 and took the field to rapturous applause from all angles after replacing club legend Ryan Giggs with 20 minutes remaining at Villa Park.

Fletcher's brave and extraordinary battle back from such a debilitating condition got us thinking, what are some of the other great comebacks in Premier League history?

With that in mind, here GMS lists eight of the most influential returns in top-flight history. Please note, these aren't all necessarily the biggest - just the ones that instantly spring to mind for a variety of reasons.

Also, we have decided to opt for a mix of those who have bounced back from injury, those who have proved themselves after adversity and players who have flourished after struggling to shed mediocre reputations and shaky starts to life in the top flight.

What do you make of our selections? Which of these 'comebacks' do you feel is the greatest?
