Premier League: Top 8 greatest comebacks (6)

Eric Cantona

In January 1995, Cantona shocked the footballing world by aiming a kung-fu style kick at a Crystal Palace fan after the latter had allegedly goaded the Frenchman with insults following a red card.

Cantona was duly handed a two-week prison sentence for the attack, later revised to 120 hours of community service. The footballing world did not go easy on him, either, with the player eventually serving an eight-month ban and having to pay a hefty fine as well as being stripped of the captaincy of his national team.

Such an event could easily have finished a volatile character such as Cantona, and indeed there were rumblings at the time that he would leave the Premier League.

However, undeterred, Cantona retuned to Manchester United and played a vital role before retiring for good in 1997.
