While Sir Alex Ferguson obviously went on to establish himself as arguably one of the greatest managers that the footballing world has ever seen, it was not always quite so rosy for the Scot at Old Trafford.

Indeed, as legend has it, he was even saved from getting the chop from the United hierarchy in January 1990 after striker Mark Robins notched a winner that sent the Red Devils into the fourt-round of the FA Cup at the expense of Nottingham Forest.

While the merits of that particular tale are commonly disputed, it was nevertheless a difficult spell with United having not tasted silverware for three years.
