Manchester United legend Paul Scholes is unlikely to come out of retirement to sign for Oldham, admits the club's manager Lee Johnson, although he adds that the door remains open to the Latics supporting icon.

Oldham are keen to recruit a creative midfielder when the transfer window opens next month and there would be no candidate more capable of pulling the strings at Boundary Park than Scholes.

The Old Trafford legend is not up to much these days having retired from Manchester United duty at the end of last season, although Johnson may struggle to convince Scholes to reverse his decision for a second time, despite his allegiances to Oldham.

Johnson is certainly not averse to the idea of approaching Scholes about another quickfire return to the game, although he admits the former Manchester United star would surely have been in contact if he was interested.

"I could try," Johnson told MEN when asked if he would consider a move for Scholes.

"I'm sure if he fancied it he'd have let us know by now."

Johnson also added that Oldham chairman Simon Corney may have already put the feelers out with regards to Scholes, while he is not completely ruling out the prospect of the 39-year-old getting itchy feet once again.

He added: "Put it this way, you know Simon!

"I respect Paul Scholes enough to not ask him but Simon will get in the mix of anything.

"You're talking about a world class player that's retired after a world class career. Why would he want to spoil that adulation by playing for me?"

"Listen - the door's open. Even to Maradona. I'm sure I could get him 10 minutes."
