Real Madrid magician Cristiano Ronaldo may have had the eternal gratitude of Manchester United fans when he stepped foot on the Old Trafford turf again last season, but that did not stop him scoring in clinical fashion against his former club.

United's ex-Portuguese powerhouse produced a performance typical of the man, helping Madrid take full advantage of Nani's untimely red card to win a hotly-anticipated Champions League last 16 tie.

Ronaldo decided not to celebrate the opening goal and described the incredible reception he received as "unbelievable", fuelling speculation over a future return to United that refuses to die down to this day.
